Communication Errors May Lead to Medical Malpractice

According to the L.A. Times, the County has agreed to a $4.5 Million settlement in a medical malpractice case. The case arose out of several alleged medical errors that occurred after a man suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash.

The L.A. Times reports that the man was initially treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a ruptured aorta, which was surgically repaired with a large stent-graft. A little over a year later, the man collapsed while playing basketball and was taken to County/USC's emergency room and later admitted. Over the course of two days, he suffered significant pain, and loss of sensation in his lower limbs, with his condition rapidly deteriorating until the physicians discovered a clot in his stent that was cutting off circulation to his lower body.

Allthough the surgeons attempted to repair the problem, it was too late to avoid permanent pararlysis.

The county has since implemented a "corrective action plan," which included improved transition of care between emergency and in-hospital services and better communication among the various service providers.

In fact, many times communication errors are to blame when medical negligence occurs.
